Dr. Nakiya Showell is a 2022 National Minority Quality Forum 40 Under 40 Leader in Minority Health!
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Nakiya Showell, core faculty at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, has been named a 2022 National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF) 40 under 40 Leader in Minority Health! Since 2016, NMQF has selected 40 minority health leaders under the age of 40, including clinicians, patient advocates, researchers and policy makers, who have been leading the charge to improve patient outcomes and build sustainable, healthy communities. Dr. Showell was selected as one of this year’s award recipients for her work and research at Johns Hopkins on child obesity disparities.
Dr. Showell is the Medical Director of the Harriet Lane Clinic (HLC), Associate Program Director of the Pediatrics Residency Program, General Pediatrician, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She is dedicated to a clinical, educational, and research career focused on addressing pediatric socioeconomic and racial/ethnic health disparities, with a particular focus on obesity and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Dr. Showell has led several projects dedicated to addressing pediatric obesity and CVD disparities and understanding the role of the COVID-19 pandemic on exacerbating health and social inequities among disenfranchised communities. Presently Dr. Showell serves as a Principal Investigator (PI) of two multisite collaborative projects. She is the Site PI of a project examining the impact of an interfaith community-based food delivery program on food insecurity and other health-related outcomes among Baltimoreans. She is also a Co-PI on a Johnson and Johnson Foundation funded project centered on the development and implementation of a family collaborative care intervention to address complex medical and social needs among children and families seen in primary care settings.
Dr. Showell has been honored with this well-deserved national recognition for the positive impact she is making on the lives of children, adolescents, and families. Now in its 7th year, NMQF 40 under 40 Leader in Minority Health recognizes and honors health leaders whose work is strengthening their communities and reducing health disparities. Rep. Robin Kelly, Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust Chair, said of this year’s recipients,
